2019 Farm & Industry Tour

We had a very nice group that boarded the bus on the morning of Oct. 1st for our 2019 Farm & Industry Tour. We traveled a short distance to our first tour of the day at Herrema Dairy's Robotic site. We had time to visit the robots, tour the facility, and learn about the unique sorting system they designed into their facility. After getting answers to our questions, we were off to WI.

Our second stop of the trip was at Rosendale Dairy featuring twin 80 cow carousels. After learning about how the farm traces its roots to a 30 cow dairy back in 1965 where that farmer's son joined two other partners and they have grown to where they are today. After viewing the carousels from above and getting questions answered by the farm manager, we were able to go into the parlor and then the cross ventilated free-stall barn. A very sobering fact we learned was that the area had received nearly 10 inches of rain the previous week and that night while we were in the area they received another 4-6 inches. They had not yet started to chop silage.

Our final stop of the day was at ST Genetics in Fond du Lac. We split the group and each visited the processing/shipping center, the "sorting area," and then the bull barn. We finished the day with a short presentation on the operation, met with some of the staff, and enjoyed a really good "cookout" meal and socializing before heading to the motel for the night.

We experienced the huge rain that night and left for the World Dairy Expo early the next morning. We were all on our own for the day to visit the International Dairy shows, the trade show, meet fellow producers or industry folks, or attend a seminar or two. We then boarded the bus and headed back home again to Indiana. We thank those who helped sponsor the trip: BMO Harris Bank, Dairyland Seed, Kaeb Sales, Milk Specialties Global, and ST Genetics. The trip seemed to be enjoyed by all.
